Silence.

Be still and know that I am God.

Psalm 46:10

Silence. Entering into silence does not happen merely by flipping an internal switch like a light switch. Entering into silence and quieting one’s heart and one’s soul is a journey, not a destination. Silence and stillness is a process of becoming. Silence happens as we open our palms one finger at a time. Slowly and even sometimes painfully.

Entering into silence is the rewiring of our soul, mind and spirit. Silence is acknowledging the thoughts that are traveling in our brain - much like planes flying over, into and from a busy airport, like Chicago O’Hare or Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta. Silence is being attentive to these thoughts and allowing the Holy Spirit to act like a traffic control tower, directing these thoughts and clearing them for take off or landing or diverting them.

Silence is experiencing the quietness of resting our souls even in the midst of a busy New York City sidewalk. Finding a place to be, instead of joining the frantic pace of human activity rushing all around us, as we open our hearts and minds to God’s activity both within and around us.

Silence really is God’s language. Without words, a gentle nudging of God’s Spirit that brings rest, deep nurturing rest for the wearied heart. A heart and soul and mind that finds a settledness and a wholeness in one being with God and seeing God being present within.

Silence. Stillness.

Be Still and know that I am God.

Be Still and know that I am.

Be Still and Know

Be still

Be

Seeing Jesus at the center. Lingering in the presence of God Almighty. Lingering in God’s love. God’s grace. God’s peace. Lingering in God

I invite you to have your body adopt a position that will allow your heart, soul and mind to be … to be with God. To Linger. Perhaps kneeling. Perhaps with eyes closed. In whatever way that opens up your soul and allows you to linger in God’s presence.

And in silence, allow the Holy Spirit be the traffic control tower of your thoughts.

Acknowledge the thoughts as they come to you and release them to God. And receive God’s love to enter your soul - the part within us which is God’s dwelling place, our meeting place with God. As Zechariah 2:13 says - Be still before the Lord, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling. Or in the words of another translation - Everyone be quiet. The Lord is coming out of his Holy house.

Notice the Lord God Almighty. Coming out of his Holy House and dwelling in your soul. And as God comes and dwells, God’s light clears up the shadows. And in the words of Isaiah 43:19, God’s light allows the eyes of your heart to see the new thing that God is doing. Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

Linger in God’s promise of doing a new thing. Allow God’s promise of a new thing to bring hope, courage, love, and peace.

Be

Be Still

Be Still and know.

Be Still and Know that I am

BE Still and Know that I am God.

Amen

As you move on to the rest of your day, take the silence and stillness along with you. This time of listening to God. This time of listening to each other. May the Holy Spirit continue to direct your thoughts and encourage your hearts as you are still before the LORD, and God Almighty comes out of his Holy house.
